"On one hand Jeannette Walls
describes the squalor she and her family lived in: hunger, poverty, garbage,
lack of basic necessities. On the other, she describes the rich intellectual
world her parents imparted: discussions of geology, math, literature, art. In
light of the fact that three out of the four Walls children became successful,
productive members of society, what do you think is more important to
children’s development: comfortable living conditions or an enriching
intellectual environment?"
I think that having an enriched intellectual environment is more important to a child's development than having comfortable living conditions.Living with all the essential life necessities does not guarantee that your children will become successful in their future. I think that having to overcome hardships in life is what makes the children want to better themselves to improve their living conditions. Sometimes the children who are provided with everything become brats and loose their way in life because they think everything should be given to them without earning it. If you educate your kids you will have a better chance in allowing them to be prepared to face any circumstance in life no matter what.
Denyse,I definitely agree with you! If people deal with hardships throughout their lives they will learn from them and become stronger as opposed to people that are spoiled and have everything handed down to them. If a child is spoiled, they will not learn the meaning of earning something and most likely take all their things for granted. Like you said, hardships make children realize that is not what they want for their future and that drives them to better themselves and look forward to a brighter future. Enriched intellectual environment is in fact important!
