In Robert Epstein’s article, "What makes a Good Parent?" there are ten factors that are believed to influence good parenting : love, affection, stress management, relationship skills, autonomy ,independence, education, learning, life skills , behavior management, health, religion, and safety. Rose Mary's strongest factors in parenting are autonomy, independence, stress management, and religion. Rose Mary thought her children to become independent and self sufficient. She taught them that they couldn't depend on anyone but themselves and i think in the long run this made them capable of going through anything. Stress management is another factor she mastered because she managed to always stay calm under any circumstance like the time when Jeannette burned herself and she calmly took her to the hospital. Being poor was something that Rose Mary did not mind , she was never under any stress to find food for her family or to pay the bills.I think she took all her stress out in her paintings. Rose Mary was also religious and she tried to teach her children to seek out something to believe in too. Factors that Rose Mary lacked in her parenting were love, affection, health, and safety. Rose Mary never showed any affection toward her children. Rose Mary was always too concentrated in doing her own thing that she set no rules or boundaries in what her children were able to do or not. A perfect example of this is when Jeannette was cooking by hot dogs herself at the age of three burned herself because her mother was busy painting. She did not care to see if her children were safe or had food to eat , she left them to do that on their own which i think was really selfish of her to do. She also lacked life skills because did not care to provide her family with income. Even when she had a job she was always trying to make up excuses for not working and was always wining about something she was responsible for. The fact that she knew that her property was worth something and never thought to use it to benefit her family was the most selfish thing she did.
Rex Walls highest parenting traits were love, affection, independence and autonomy . In his own very special way Rex Walls loved his children. I think one of the most special things he did for his children was allowing them to choose a star and in Jeannette's case a planet. Another time in which I think Rex showed how much he love his children was when Jeannette was about to drop out of school because she didn't have enough money and he gave her the money she needed because he knew that that was the only way Jeannette was going to accomplish something in life. He specially reinforce on his children to be independent and self-reliant. Rex Walls worst traits were health, relationship skills, life skills and religion. He was never a role model for his children, he had the worst habits and lifestyle- he was an alcoholic who could never mange to have a steady job. He was never able to have a permanent home, he always seemed to be on the urge to move. Rex's relationship skills with his wife and others was something he was not good at. When he got drunk he would always be on the verge of killing Rose Mary. He always managed to find a fight with others like the doctor that was treating Jeannette when she was burned, the church's priest and anyone he thought was out to get him. Being an alcoholic also explains how he was never able to manage stress because he sought alcohol to relive all his issues in life.
